Kedok Ireng Dance, Traditional Dances From West Java

Kedok Ireng Dance is one of the traditional dances originating from West Java. This dance is a picture of the life of a human being seen from two sides, that is good and bad. Kedok Ireng Dance is one of the most well-known dances in West Java and is still often performed in important events, such as welcoming big guests, weddings and on other occasions.

Kedok Ireng Dance is a dance that is inspired from two sides that are always inherent in a human being, that is good and bad. Throughout his life, sometimes humans must wear a mask in covering his identity. Mask or commonly referred to by this guise will continue to stick as long as humans live their lives.

In the show, this dance is usually danced by 3 (three) dancers. At the beginning of the dance, the three dancers sit cross-legged in the center of the stage. Using brightly colored costumes, the dancers bowed and soon they stood and had been wearing a pink mask. Then from the side of the stage appeared 7 (seven) dancers complete the formation of Kedok Ireng Dance. With a flexible movement, the dancers are then danced in pairs by using a mask. The paired formation is like indicating that 2 (two) good and the bad side will always exist in man.

The ten dancers look more energetic by occasionally jumping and throwing the shawl. On the other hand, the dancers will also take off the mask and spin. The dancers also occasionally will form a formation like to give a speech to the audience.

In the show, Kedok Ireng Dance will be accompanied by traditional musical instruments such as kendang and gamelan. This musical instrument is played in harmony and also in harmony with the movements of the dancers.

Kata Kedok Ireng itself comes from 2 (two) words, namely Kedok and Ireng. Kedok means face covering, while Ireng means black. In general, Kedok Ireng has the meaning of life picture of a human being seen from the side of good and bad. In everyday life, people are always faced in two sides of life that will always be attached to the human to death to pick up.
